The Monkey King
By Elizabeth Chang
This poem is inspired by Journey to the West, an ancient Chinese epic story about the Monkey King and the monk, Tripitaka as they make their journey to retrieve the scripts. The poem is a celebration of my culture and my love for the story. - Elizabeth Chang
Born from stone he needed to atone
There’s no need to be impressed by his skill
Wreaking havoc in Heaven
Just for the the thrill
Monkey couldn’t chill
He stole the immortal peaches
Just because it was in reaches
What a greedy monkey
Just wasn’t so lucky
Blazing red eyes
He could not disguise
Driven by his fear of death
He took one final breath
Blew on his hair
Releasing an army of clones
Out of thin air
A monkey born of stones.
